Chapter Text

Merlin's father left one thing behind when he ran from Ealdor - a pendant that blocks tampering with one's mind. Turns out it also blocks Mindspeak, including that of a meddlesome, bitter bitch named Kilgharrah. The pendant is there to guide Merlin through all the magical threats.

Chapter Text

An accidental dimension traveler Betty and Merlin has grown up together and traveled all over Albion, they have dealt with Arthur and Mary Collins much more subtly and both are Gaius' apprentices. When sir Ewan is bitten, Arthur goes to visit him in physician's chambers, and overhears a heated discussion between Merlin and Betty about how to proceed with the information that sir Ewan was bitten by the snakes in Valiant's shield. Betty wants to go to a Camelot knight and say that sir Ewan was poisoned and they suspect poisoned weapons so someone should check if there's cheating in the tournament, while Merlin wants to tell the truth, to which Betty says "don't be daft, Merlin, who would believe two lowly apprentices accusing a knight about using a magical snake shield in the middle of Camelot?". Arthur tells Leon about their suspicions, they talk to Uther, meanwhile Merlin and Betty kill the snake sent to finish sir Ewan, Uther arrives and questions the knight, finds out about the shield and orders Valiant's execution

Chapter Text

Arthur recognises the magical light as Merlin because it whispers his mumbling to him. Obviously he doesn't turn him in but rather silently helps from sidelines and gives some pretty solid advice

Chapter Text

After Merlin kills the sidhe, he realises that he can't deal with so much blood on his hands, so he decides to find a way to save lives instead of taking them. He researches and develops a spell that creates a sentient clone of a person for three days, uses it to save Cerdan and gets both him and Mordred to the druids, saves the knights that fight Tristan, any innocent sorcerers or accomplices, Will, the unicorn, Tom and then Arthur, that's how he reveals his magic to him, then he uses it to send Morgana for some training with the druids, and then he very dramatically saves someone from a sorcerer trying to kill them in front of all of Camelot

Chapter Text

When Kilgharrah tells Merlin to let Mordred die, the warlock decides that a bitter and vengeful dragon is not the best person to go to for advice. Instead he makes connections with the druids, who, with help from other magic users, teach him everything he needs to know to help free magic

Chapter Text

Merlin enchants Arthur's regular sword with the spell he used against the griffin and breaks him out of his chambers. Arthur wins

Chapter Text

Merlin has been blamed for not stopping the king from fighting the Black Knight and getting injured, so he's angry with Arthur for his three days in the stocks, even though Uther had asked Gaius to stall Merlin. Therefore Merlin doesn't let Hunith ask the king for help against the bandits and secretly goes to help them alone. After freeing his village he realises that Arthur doesn't care about his presence so he might as well leave Camelot and travel Albion to help against magical or overwhelming threats. He had kept Excalibur hidden under his bed, so now he offers Kilgharrah to free him if the dragon makes a binding promise that he will never attack Camelot and her people and if Merlin were to ever leave Camelot, Kilgharrah would leave along with him and return only if Merlin calls him. Kilgharrah agrees and is set free, and Merlin leaves. A few months later Arthur is regent and has slain the unicorn, cursing Camelot, and he accepts that there is a curse but doesn't know how to break it. Merlin has left Morgana a message about how to summon help if needed and she calls him. Arthur says that magic is a force of evil because unlike another weapon like a sword it's only use is killing his people, so Merlin looks him in the eye, puts his hand on an empty pitcher and casts a water creating spell, then very sarcastically asks "can a sword do that?"

Chapter Text

Sigan was the dark Avatar, that's why he was so powerful, and he was sealed in the gem to stop him. Merlin hasn't had such an argument with Arthur, so he isn't thrown in the dungeons and accompanies Arthur in his battle with the possessed Cedric, where Arthur gets lightly knocked out, Sigan tries to possess Merlin, Merlin is stronger and pushes out his spirit, but unknowingly fuses his own with Raava. Next evening he's helping Arthur go over paperwork before dinner when he lights the candles, carries a candle over to another place and puts it down while bantering with Arthur and doesn't even realize that the flame is still in his hand. Arthur thinks it's sorcery and freaks out and Merlin thinks that his death warrant is signed but Arthur realizes that his eyes stay blue and reassures Merlin that as it's not sorcery it's not treason so his father doesn't have to ever find out. He still thinks that Merlin is weak and an idiot, but Merlin masters his new abilities and constantly surprises him with what he can do, and later on he even manages to make his magic seem like bending so he starts to tell the truth about saving Camelot instead of 'gathering herbs' or 'being at the tavern'

Chapter Text

After the mess with Sigan, Merlin is done with being Arthur's chew toy, so he doesn't help him with cheating in the the tournament. Instead he hangs out with Gwen because she's his best friend and he misses her. He also has been learning how to fight from her. When Morgana comes to him with her magic, he mixes her a calming potion, hugs her tight and tells her that he's there for her, so when Gwen is kidnapped Morgana goes to him for help before even approaching Arthur. Merlin rescues Gwen with the help of Lancelot, and, while Morgana still tries to get either Arthur or Uther to get someone to rescue Gwen, Merlin leads her in with a smug grin.

[He beamed. He preened. He seemed to be glowing with pride and radiating smug satisfaction.

Chapter Text

Merlin is busy with all his chores so, to help Morgana, he introduces her to his friend Loki, because, while the magic of the Old Religion and seidr are different, the very basics of all magic are the same and he can teach her enough that she is in control instead of her magic

Chapter Text

When Uther got angry with Nimue for not preventing Ygraine's death and accidentally accused her of causing it, she, also accidentally, cursed him to feel this anger towards every magic user. When Merlin and Gaius plan how to break the troll's spell on Uther, Arthur refuses to be the bait. They try something else but it only partially works, so Uther is still in love with the troll but doesn't follow her every command anymore. Merlin protects Uther from the attacking troll and Uther notices him using magic. There are some magical similarities between both spells that has caused Nimue's spell to slightly lift, too, so Uther starts to wonder why would a sorcerer protect a man who condemns them to death, realises that it's because of Arthur, that so many things have better explanations when there's someone doing magic and that Merlin has even saved his life directly before, then thinks that if Merlin was evil he could have just let them die but he didn't, wonders about how could he have been so wrong about sorcerers, how much better the life was before the purge even without Ygraine and how he lost his best friend to his own madness, and cries tears of true remorse, which was an unintentional failsafe to break Nimue's spell as well.

Chapter Text

# Uther redemption ;Morgana knows about Merlin's magic ;
Instead of Gaius, Morgana is framed for sorcery. Merlin visits her in the dungeons because Uther thinks that Arthur and Gwen would try to break her out so they are forbidden to visit her, but he didn't think that Arthur's stupid manservant could do anything like that. She explains that it wasn't her bracelet and she had never seen it before, so Merlin theorises that Aredian planted it and that there are several plants that can give someone hallucinations that he could have given to the witnesses somehow. Morgana says that it doesn't matter because from now on every time something magical happens everyone will blame her again. Merlin tells her that there is still time before dawn and that he won't give her false hope that everything will be alright but if the worst happens then they all will be there for her until the end and that she's not alone.
He goes to meet up with Gwen to try to find evidence to clear Morgana. Turns out Uther has been eavesdropping on them and is suspicious of Aredian now.
Gwen and Merlin search Aredian's chambers for evidence and find a cupboard filled with bracelets and belladonna tincture bottles. Merlin says that if they fail to convince the king, he could just take the blame and 'confess' that he planted the bracelet in Morgana's chambers. Gwen asks if he means like he 'confessed' about healing her father, he pauses awkwardly and says "what, no- I mean, yeah... Obviously...". They can't find the king so Merlin drags Arthur along.
They burst into Aredian's chambers and see him attacking Uther with a dagger. Merlin bodily slams into Aredian and pushes him away from the king. Arthur has checked his father over and then beheads Aredian, but Merlin is stabbed and hit on the head with the hilt of the dagger. Uther calls for the guards, asks them to get Gaius, call together the council and immediately release lady Morgana and escort her to the throne room. When Gaius arrives, he pulls him to the side and questions him if Merlin is Balinor's boy, why he saved him and whom is he loyal to.
Turns out that Aredian with some traitor friends had placed a very powerful enchantment on Uther 20 years ago to blame magic and try to destroy it, so they would have more job and therefore more money and ability to take out anyone they didn't like. Uther acknowledges Morgana as his daughter by blood, restores the nobility of the house of Ambrosius to all its descendants and abdicates and gives the crown to Arthur. Arthur has been taught that restoring nobility would usually extend to the sons of a house, so he asks if Uther did it for a daughter, but Gaius interjects with a proud smile that actually he did it for Balinor's bastard.

Chapter Text

After the Morteus flower and the serket sting Merlin's blood has become poisonous due to a reaction with his magic. He has accidentally convinced Morgana to drink the hemlock herself. She was slightly brainwashed by Morgause but gets better during the confrontation in the crypts.
Morgause has used a spell that creates another questing beast at the moment of her death, and Arthur, Merlin and a bunch of knights go to find and kill it. When they make camp, Arthur sends Merlin to the river to fill their waterskins, and Merlin is attacked and his arm is bitten by the questing beast. The beast dies, while Merlin wraps the bite with his neckerchief and his jacket, fills the waterskins and returns to the camp. Arthur has been badmouthing him for being tardy, when he staggers into the camp and barely doesn't trip into the fire. The knights realise that he's heavily injured and one of them takes him back to Camelot. The rest of them find the questing beast dead.
When Gaius finds out that Merlin was bitten, he doses him with every healing potion that he knows but says that either Merlin will wake up in the morning or he never will, because he had only had one dose of the cure that was guaranteed to work and he used it on Artur. Merlin has had a disagreement with Gwen about supposedly not taking his duties seriously enough, although he never knew that some of them even existed, with Morgana about hiding her magic because she wants to force Uther to legalise it but Merlin thinks it might create a backlash that would be even more dangerous than what is happening now, and with Arthur about being useless although he has to do the job of several servants and sometimes even Arthur himself, do chores for Gaius and secretly save Camelot, and those quarrels have started rumors that have turned most of the other servants against him, but after he is bitten and seemingly has almost no chance of survival, they all realize that most of that all was never his fault.
While Arthur wonders how Merlin survived the bite and killed the beast, he realizes that Merlin has magic and he's still not evil. He speaks to Gaius about Merlin's magic and finds out that Balinor was his father. Arthur has an argument about the supposed evil of magic and magic users and the reasons behind the creation of the questing beast with Uther, who asks him why would he even care about a servant, to which Arthur says "if you hadn't betrayed the people of Camelot, he would now be a lord". Uther also realises about Balinor and everything that Merlin has done for Camelot.
The next morning Merlin wakes up. Uther organises a 'trial' for him, saying that he's accused of sorcery and asks if he denies the accusation. Morgana interrupts and says that if Uther is gonna burn him, he better make sure there's enough room on the pyre for her as well and confesses about her own magic, although Merlin tries to convince everyone that he put a time delayed spell on her to say that. To disprove him, she creates a ball of fire in her palm

- at the end of the day, those are your laws that made them turn against Camelot. Your laws that left them no other way. And their blood may be on my hands, but it is on yours as well. .

Chapter Text

Merlin is in love with Arthur. Gwen is in love with Lancelot who has stayed as a guard. Merlin kind of finds out about the enchantment much sooner and in a flash of jealousy kisses Arthur, which breaks the spell

Chapter Text

# magic reveal; Morgana redemption
- You don't have magic, Merlin, how could you understand?
- You are wrong, Morgana. You ask me to turn my back on the rest of the world, while the world burns! My people burn and I can't save them. My people die and I do nothing! They scream in fear while I stay silent like the coward that I am. You might have had nightmares for years but for years they were just that, just nightmares, and you woke up to a world of safety and happiness! I have lived a nightmare since my very first breath! I've been a monster since the very first beat of my heart! I don't have magic, I am magic! And if you only had the one chance to save everyone you still can, would you not take it?

Chapter Text

Arthur has found out some parts about Merlin's magic and his father during the Saxons' attack. Merlin has convinced Morgana to turn against Morgause when the knights of Medhir attacked, so he didn't free Kilgharrah before finding out about his father, who takes the dragon away from Camelot and teaches them both everything he knows. Morgause still attacks Camelot and Arthur as Morgana was supposed to, but the bracelet was swapped and had a slightly faulty glamour on. Arthur has grown distant and cold towards Merlin while trying to sort out his responsibilities towards Camelot and feelings towards Merlin, so Merlin tries to keep his head down.
During the round table scene there's also Morgana, she says that she will stand with Arthur because, no matter the blood, they've always been a family, Merlin says "I will die anyway. If my death can buy even one chance for another to live, it is a price I'm willing to pay". When Arthur has knighted the others, he tells Merlin to kneel [..]

Merlin felt the sword singing in Arthur's hand and couldn't help the shudder when he realized that should Arthur choose so, this would be the last thing he saw. Blind faith in the man he still saw as his best friend was trying to tame his fears, resignation accepting his sentence whatever it would be.
A tap on the right shoulder. A tap on the left.
- Arise, lord Ambrosius! -

Chapter Text

[Nighttime, there is moon and stars]
[The Cailleach asks for a sacrifice, Merlin freezes everyone, there are wyverns attacking, he tells them to stop, they bow to him, he desperately asks if there is any other animal on the Isle that could take their place in the veil, because he has to protect Arthur, lists everyone who he has failed to save to save Arthur or not reveal his own magic, the Cailleach says that the veil was ripped by a sacrifice of death so he could heal it by sacrifice of life - blood, he readily agrees, Cailleach creates a stone bowl, Merlin cuts his wrist and fills it with his blood, she asks him to kneel, dips her fingers in the blood and draws a line on each side of the veil,]
- Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of Magic according to their respective laws and customs? -
- I solemnly swear so to do. -
She dips her thumbs in the blood and draws a crescent between his brows.
- Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgments? -
- I will. -
She dips all her fingers in the blood and leaves a line of dots across each cheekbone.
- Do you renounce the prophecy of bringing magic back to Camelot and starting the Golden Age as the price for breaking the prophecies of the Witch and the Druid so that your king lives more than the time foreseen? -
- I do. -
- Then you have chosen. -
With bloody fingers she colours his upper lip and draws the line from his lower lip down over his chin.
- With a promise I set your path. With a choice I seal your destiny. With the gifts you have by birth, by inheritance and by conquest you shall arise.
Let your blood coat your hands! -
He complies and follows her to the swirling darkness.
- Now close it. -
Merlin puts his palms on each side of the tear and pulls them together. A blinding fire burns the seam together, seemingly burning him as well, for why else would he be in such agony?
The fire engulfs him. The veil is closed.
As he collapses on the ground, the knights are released. Lancelot runs to him and helps him when he tries to stand.
- Merlin? -
The warlock turns to his king. There is a dainty circlet of silver leaves running across his brow with faceted crystals hanging from it and framing his face. In the faint moonlight he looks fragile and elven, even with blood on his face and hands.
He looks beautiful but also sad and determined, willing to face whatever judgment may be laid upon him. There are tears silently streaming over his cheeks, and Arthur can't take it anymore, can't look at his sadness knowing that he is the reason, knowing that Merlin would do anything for him and never ask for anything back, and his heart aches with overwhelming gratitude.
He crosses the distance between them, and gently captures Merlin's lips with his own, but after a few unresponsive moments realizes what he's doing and pulls back.
- I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to force it on you like that, I just thought I'd lose you tonight--
He's cut off by taste of blood on his lips again and hands snaking into his hair, and, when they finally break apart for air, a quiet whisper.
- I love you. -

Chapter Text

Morgana has been talked down from killing Arthur, and Agravaine arrives to truly help him. Ygraine had a little bit of magic, she could light small fires and make flower buds bloom. Arthur realises that Merlin lied about Morgause, because they all had believed that Uther hadn't cared about or understood the price of a new life, but Agravaine and Gaius explains why he did it and what else he has kept from Arthur to keep him safe and happy

Chapter Text

# his father's son; with a twist; Caerleon lives; he knew Balinor; Merlin becomes lord; Merlin snaps; BAMF Merlin
When Caerleon chases him in the dead end, the king comments that he thought that Merlin's father had lost his title. Merlin says that he's dressed as a knight just as a bait. Caerleon kneels before Merlin and officially places himself and his men at Merlin's mercy. While Aggravaine tries to object, Merlin asks the king to never attack Camelot or her people again, and he agrees. Merlin tells Arthur that he will go to the border with them to make sure that they leave. On the way he tells Caerleon about Aggravaine and his attempts to destroy Camelot and Arthur's reign, then gets taken to the court of Caerleon and promised to always have them by his side for the mercy he showed their king. The king tells him a lot of stories about his father and gifts him with a horse and a deep blue cloak with his father's sigil. Merlin returns to Camelot as a part of the peace envoy?

Chapter Text

[Morgana isn't bad, Merlin had a quarrel with Arthur about the king not needing him a few years ago and became severely depressed, so to prevent further breaking, he partially erased everyone's memory of himself and the time he spent with Arthur, he returned as a magically altered sorcerer Dragoneyes and established a new relationship with Arthur, then Morgause happened and brainwashed him to kill Arthur, which makes him feel conflicted]
Morgause looked at him when she asked so he looked right back when he gave his stone-cold answer.
- It is my duty. It is my destiny. I was born because you were.
And he walked up to the king, so nicely tied to the pole next to his Mistress, and drew king's sword.
Arthur knew that pleading would be a waste of time but he was determined to at least look his death in the eyes, when he noticed in those eyes - was it... tenderness?
Merlin aligned the tip of Excalibur with king's chest.
- Forged by Gwen's father. Blessed by Kilgharah's fire. Stuck in a stone awaiting a worthy king.

He thrusted his hand, sliding the sword right between her ribs.
- But you miscalculated. A half cannot hate that what makes it whole. His destiny is to stand up against his father's teachings and bring peace and prosperity to the land of Albion just as much as mine is to guide and protect him. For a High Priestess you sure are blind to magic, for I am Emrys.
With these words he shed his disguise, burned the ropes she had tied around Arthur's wrists, pulled the sword from her lifeless side and kneeling offered it to his king.
[Arthur puts away the sword and takes Merlin's hands, and asks why he did it, Merlin is in emotional pain and ducks his head with eyes squeezed shut]
- No, stand up! Stand up and look me in the eye when you answer!
Arthur was holding his hands, still not letting go, as the sorcerer rose, silent tears streaming over both their faces.
- Where... Where are you?... In this prophecy, where do you stand?
[Still more tears and still more silence]
- Right beside you, - Merlin heavily whispered.
- That's all I had to know.
And he closed the space between them with what he had dreamed to do all this time.
[It's a kiss, okay?]

Chapter Text

Moments before Agravaine slices Gaius's throat, he is stunned from behind and wrapped in ropes. Turns out that Merlin contacted his friend Harry Potter, who also stuns and ties up Morgana, somewhat heals Gaius and Merlin and helps them get back to Camelot. He also convinces Arthur of some hard-to-swallow truth about his family.

Chapter Text

# magic revealed; angst; Merlin rants; angst with a happy ending
- So what will it be? Legalise magic or let Mordred die?
- Please don't make me choose, my lord. Because I can't. If it was anyone else... If it was any other knight or commoner, even if it was an enemy of Camelot, I would beg you to save them. But when there's a choice between you or my people, what you want or what's right, between letting him live to betray you or forever live as a monster in the shadows just to be buried in an unmarked grave... I would always choose you, with no hesitation. I've lost too much to loose you too. My childhood best friend died for us and you scorned his funeral pyre. I planned to start a new life with my first love, two days later I buried her in the lake of Avalon and the next morning I had to clean her blood from your sword! I finally found my father and after a day he died in my arms and you told me that no man was worth my tears! I could have saved him, had I been less of a coward, but all I have left of him is a wooden dragon and another set of powers I never asked for! Lancelot was the only one who truly knew me! Look where it got him! Brought back as a shade to do Morgana's bidding! Gwen was my first friend here! Now she's queen and doesn't have time for such trivial things! Of course, she was enchanted to cheat on you by Morgana, but it didn't end up mattering, did it? Just as the pendant that Agravaine slipped around Uther's neck to reverse the healing magic never mattered after all. Gwaine despised nobility! Sometimes it feels like he despises me now! I can't go on like that! I can't! But there's nothing to be done! Because no matter how much I've ever claimed to fear Uther or the pyre, it was always about you! About betrayal, or disappointment, or hatred! I only ever feared to lose you... You know, when Edwin came with his magic beetles and tried to kill Uther, I saved him with magic... When he was about to fight the wraith of Tristan de Bois, I gave him a magical sword... I sent away the dragon, whose only goal was revenge upon Uther for his slayed kin... Yet the one time that I could make a difference - I failed...
During Merlin's tirade Arthur had stayed silent, looking more and more stony faced. Still not saying a word, he raised his sword and brought the pommel down on Merlin's head, catching him, when the warlock crumpled on the ground. After carefully laying him down next to the fire and wrapping him in his red cloak, Arthur went back to the cave.
- Back already, Pendragon? -
- There is still time before dawn. -
- Have you made your choice?
- Yes. I believe I have.

Merlin woke up with a killer headache and fingers softly carding through his hair. When he opened his eyes, he was met with a steely gaze.
- You are going to tell me everything. Then I'll have you in stocks for a while. And then we have some laws to change.

Chapter Text

Arthur forgets Merlin at the cauldron of Arianrhod(?) and returns to Camelot. When Betty in her dragon form flies in with unconscious Merlin and shifts back, Gaius is in the courtyard, so she tells him that Merlin has a concussion, several broken bones, internal bleeding, dehydration and overexertion and asks him as Merlin's medical proxy for permission to move him to a secondary location for treatment. He agrees, she thanks him, puts up her arm and calls down the rainbow bridge.
Alator escapes.
Kara manages to injure Arthur. He notices that Mordred is devastated about her fate, and calls him to his chambers and begs him to convince her to promise that she will never attempt to harm him or Camelot again because he doesn't want to sentence her to death and if it was just about her magic he would find a way to forgive it but she tried to kill the king so he would have to execute her. Mordred tries to make her change her mind, but doesn't succeed. In her trial she is given one last chance to walk free, but she says that she will never stop working against a monster like Arthur. Arthur looks at Mordred with regret, and Mordred realises that she has changed and he can't condone her actions and the way she ruins the perception of magic as something good. He tells Arthur that he's afraid she has made her choice, and Arthur reluctantly sentences her.
That evening they have another discussion at the training grounds. Arthur apologises and Mordred forgives him as he understands why it happened. Then he realises that if they hadn't talked before the trial then he would resent Arthur for killing Kara and possibly turned against him. He tells Arthur that Merlin did everything in his power to keep him safe and that would explain his dislike of him if he thought that Mordred would harm or kill Arthur.
At that moment the rainbow bridge activates. Betty has brought Merlin back fully healed. Mordred introduces himself to her and Betty says "well met, Fatebreaker". Merlin asks if she meant what he thought she meant, she confirms, and he collapses in Mordred's arms and starts sobbing and apologising, saying "for what it's worth, and I know it's worth nothing, I am sorry". Mordred says "for what it's worth, and to me it's worth everything, I forgive you, my lord".
Arthur is confused
